Founded in Santa Barbara, California in early 2012, the Now Hear Ensemble is a unique combination of double bass, percussion, clarinet, viola, and saxophone, who’s primary goal is the premier of new works by emerging composers.

Total mastery of patience, time, and drama create a constantly engaging journey that never gets tiresome or same-y: in fact the harder you listen the better it gets! Somehow Sorey et al. find a way to combine the deep listening and spontaneous interaction of the best jazz with the sense of every tone and sound being worth a universe of listening, which could be equally from Cage and Feldman or the accompaniment to an ancient ritual. The recording/engineering is absolutely perfect as well.

Have heard Shipp with different combinations of these musicians in other outstanding recordings. Not sure I recall this particular grouping, but it really cooks! Some beautiful, enjoyable music here.

Very complex neo-classical music. This has lots of layers to it, and sounds at times discordant, but I like it more with each listen. This band requires some patience, but I think you get rewarded for that patience. Found in Ed Buckley's collection.
